Chapter Nine

At the end of Dymond Road, five kilometers west of the New York and Massachusetts border, an undocumented road led to Westvale Security’s Springfire compound. Deep in the woods, the facility was surrounded by fifteen-foot concrete walls camouflaged in roughly manicured hedges. The small convoy of vehicles drove through the gate at 9:15 PM.

Sinclair sat with her back pressed against the ridged, metal walls of the van. They had been driving for over an hour when she felt the vehicle stop and the engine turn off. The two men guarding her and Merryweather remained standing, leaning against the wall on the other side. They kept their fingers near the triggers of their rifles, which dangled from cords attached to tactical vests.

“Get up,” the man facing Sinclair said.

Sinclair and Merryweather stood as the door opened. One of the men motioned and they exited the vehicle. Lights angled downward from tall poles illuminated the parking lot. Sinclair studied the building. The wall before her revealed no windows, only a single roller door.

The men exited the other vehicles, surrounding Sinclair and Merryweather at a distance. One of them held Adam by the hand. His eyes were red; tears had marked his cheeks with glistening pale streaks. The roller door began retracting.

“Get the HALO out,” the guard said. “Put it inside against the far wall. Then put it back in standby.”

Merryweather removed her laptop and perched it on one hand while tapping on the keyboard.

“Okay, come out and go inside the building all the way to the back,” Sinclair said to the warden.

The HALO powered up and walked out of the van. Sinclair followed Merryweather inside with the HALO close behind. Once the mech was in place, one of the men reached out.

“I’ll take that; phones too.”

Merryweather and Sinclair handed the man their phones and the computer. He placed them on a bench near the HALO.

“Alright, this way,” he said nodding toward a door.

“What’s this about? Why are we here?” Merryweather demanded.

“Not my job,” he said nodding at the door again.

They walked through the door and entered a hallway. The interior of the building was brightly lit with white, pristine floors and walls. Doors and windows were set at intervals along the corridor. They walked to the first door and one of the men led Merryweather inside before closing it.

Sinclair turned her head and scowled at the man behind her. “Where are you taking her?”

“She’ll be fine. Keep moving.”

They walked to another door and the man guarding Sinclair placed his hand on a scanner, opened the door, and guided her in. Adam began crying and Sinclair pushed against the man and back into the hallway.

“It’s okay, Adam,” Sinclair said, then turned to the guard as he pressed her toward the room. “Let him come with me. What’s wrong with you? He’s just a kid; he’s scared.”

“Sit,” the man said, pushing Sinclair through the door and closing it once they were both inside.

The small room contained a table and two chairs. A large mirror was built into the wall opposite the door.
